UPDATE (11.29am): Mitchell Johnson has announced his decision to retire to teammates before the fifth day of the Perth Test against New Zealand.<\/h3>\n

Johnson will retire as Australia\u2019s fourth-highest Test wicket taker (311), behind only Shane Warne (708), Glenn McGrath (563) and Dennis Lillee (355).<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel now is the best time to say goodbye,\u201d Johnson said in a statement released by Cricket Australia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been lucky enough to have had a wonderful career and enjoyed every moment of playing for my country. It\u2019s been an incredible ride.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the ride has to come to an end at some point and to do so here at the WACA is very special.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve given the decision a lot of thought. Beyond this match, I\u2019m just not sure that I can continue competing consistently at the level required to wear the Baggy Green.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy career has certainly had its up and downs but I can honestly say I have given it my all and am proud of everything I have achieved. To win an Ashes Series and a Cricket World Cup is something I will treasure forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy family have been by my side throughout and I could not have achieved all I have without their support. They have made a lot of sacrifices, especially my beautiful wife Jess who has provided me with unconditional support, and I am incredibly grateful for that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say the greatest thing about playing sport is the friends you make along the way and I have been fortunate enough to play and work with some incredible people and have cemented lifelong friendships.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would certainly like to thank the people of Australia, and all those around the world, who have supported me. The encouragement I have received has been extremely humbling and playing in front of them is certainly something I will miss.\u201d<\/p>\n

EARLIER<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speculation is rife that the second New Zealand Test in Perth will be fast bowler Mitchell Johnson\u2019s last.<\/h3>\n

An announcement is reportedly expected today or within the next 48 hours.<\/p>\n

Fox Sports reports that Johnson was in tears at the end of play on day three and was spotted in deep conversation with team psychologist Michael Lloyd before play on day four.<\/p>\n

Before the Test Johnson was candid about the fact retirement was on his mind.<\/p>\n

“I think about it most days,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cIt’s probably getting to that time.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I’m just trying to go out there and play each game and enjoy it. Who knows? It could be after this game. I might just go ‘I’m done’.”<\/p>\n

The comments were seized on by Ian Chappell.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you start saying publicly (that retirement is on your mind), obviously the end is pretty close,\u201d he said on Channel Nine.<\/p>\n

The Perth Test has been a tough one for bowlers, but Johnson particularly copped some stick finishing NZ\u2019s first innings with figures of 1-157.<\/p>\n

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor also speculated on Johnson\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

“Once you start thinking about giving the game away it\u2019s always a worrying sign, because days like Australia have had over the last day and a half, 130-odd overs in the field, they weigh heavily on you,” he said on Channel Nine.<\/p>\n

“You start to think, ‘Should I still be playing, I\u2019m now 34, the body\u2019s getting a bit older, I\u2019m getting a bit sorer, do I still really want to do it?\u2019<\/p>\n

“That day yesterday would have really tested him.\u201d<\/p>\n
