{"id":20911,"date":"2015-10-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/eddie-mcguire-backs-afl-drug-revamp\/"},"modified":"2015-10-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T00:00:00","slug":"eddie-mcguire-backs-afl-drug-revamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/eddie-mcguire-backs-afl-drug-revamp\/","title":{"rendered":"McGuire backs AFL drug revamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has backed an upgraded&nbsp;illicit drugs policy, referring to the previous code as a \u201clame duck\u201d.<\/h3>\n<p>The Herald Sun reports the AFL will sign off on an updated policy on Wednesday, which will see second-strike drug offenders publicly named, suspended (four weeks) and fined ($5,000).<\/p>\n<p>A third strike could incur as much as a 12-week ban and a $10,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed to do something, to be honest,\u201d McGuire said on Melbourne radio.<\/p>\n<p>He said the existing code had become ineffectual. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was well out of control and I think everyone in the football world and the greater community believed the old one to be a lame duck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd as soon as everyone knows that there\u2019s no sting to these things, then they become abused,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the end of it, players were using it as almost a starter kit.
