Former C.I.A. employee Edward Snowden \u2013 who famously leaked classified info showing the National Security Agency was spying on US citizens \u2013 has warned that spy agencies have the power to take over smart phones.<\/h3>\n

Speaking to the BBC, Snowden warned UK citizens that Britain\u2019s digital spy agency had a range of phone intercept capabilities known as \u201csmurfs\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNosey smurf is the hot mic-ing tool,\u201d said Snowden.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo for example, if it\u2019s in your pocket, they can turn the microphone on and listen to everything that\u2019s going on around you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s \u201ctracker smurf\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a geolocation tool which allows them to follow you with greater precision than you would get from the typical triangulation of a cell phone tower,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Snowden also claimed spies could control phone microphones, use phone cameras and turn phones on and off.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to own your phone instead of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
