UPDATE: AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan hasn’t ruled out investigating claims by Daniel Chick that West Coast Eagles staff helped cover up drug use in 2006.<\/h3>\n

“I think we’d certainty make some enquiries, I don’t know how far it goes, it is ten years ago,\u201d McLachlan told Melbourne radio station SEN.<\/p>\n

“He’s made allegations that are pretty strong and that obviously is something that will be concerning to everyone involved and I need to work through that, because there’s two sides to the story.”<\/p>\n

EARLIER<\/h3>\n

Daniel Chick has lifted the lid on the toxic culture of drug use and cover-ups at the West Coast Eagles in 2006 when the club when the AFL premiership.<\/h3>\n

Chick has told the Herald Sun<\/a> that he and former teammates Daniel Kerr and Ben Cousins took massive doses of asthma drug prednisone which they had approval to use as all three suffered from asthma.<\/p>\n

He said he took the drug during the season, on game days, and with other stimulants.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t even sit still on the bench,\u201d Chick told the Herald Sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started taking the 20mgs and 5mgs tablets on game day but then it escalated up to 40 to 50mgs quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt smashes your system. I\u2019ve since read a lot about it, we didn\u2019t know what was done to us. You feel bulletproof basically.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the next day or two you wouldn\u2019t feel knocks but by Wednesday you flatten out and it is hard to get going again. Once you are in that cycle it was like an addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chick said it was \u201cthe same as being a full-on meth addict\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lack of sleep, the depression, it affects your mental health, coping mechanisms, metabolic rates and causes memory loss and sleep issues. It\u2019s not a coincidence the three of us have had issues with substance abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chick has blamed what happened on a \u201clack of leadership\u201d at West Coast \u2013 \u201cfrom the top down\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlayers\u2019 health should be more important than protecting the brand … I don\u2019t think the premiership is tainted but it came at too high a price.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne staffer even ushered a player out the back door that he knew would fail a drug test. He said the player was not at training and was home sick.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Chick also told the Herald Sun that use of cocaine, ecstasy and methamphetamine was widespread throughout the club.<\/p>\n
