{"id":21309,"date":"2015-09-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/unfriending-colleagues-facebook-could-be-workplace-bullying\/"},"modified":"2015-09-25T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-09-25T00:00:00","slug":"unfriending-colleagues-facebook-could-be-workplace-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/unfriending-colleagues-facebook-could-be-workplace-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"Unfriending a colleague on Facebook could now be considered workplace bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Image | Facebook<\/h6>\n<h3>Ever deleted a work colleague off Facebook?&nbsp;According to a new ruling by the workplace tribunal, that could actually constitute workplace bullying.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>The decision came after a case was brought to the Australian Fair Work Commission in February this year by real estate agent Rachael Roberts of VIEW Launceston.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Roberts alleged that she was being bullied by the business owner James Bird and particularly by his wife, sales administrator Lisa. She nearly 18 separate run-ins, nine of which were upheld by the commission\u2013 primarily with Lisa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In once case Lisa had allegedly called her a \u201cnaughty little schoolgirl running to the teacher\u201d after she had phoned James to question why none of her properties were displayed in the office windows. Lisa then allegedly stood in front of the door when she tried to leave the meeting, pointing at her and telling her to sit down.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts said she was in a \u201cvery distressed state\u201d after the incident when it occurred to her that Bird might take to Facebook to make a comment about it. When she went to check Bird\u2019s page, Robert found that she had been unfriended. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis action by Mrs Bird evinces a lack of emotional maturity and is indicative of unreasonable behaviour, the likes of which I have already made findings on,\u201d the deputy president of the Fair Work Commission Nicole Wells found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018schoolgirl\u2019 comment, even accepting of Mrs Bird\u2019s version of events, which I am not, is evidence of an inappropriate dealing with Ms Roberts which was provocative and disobliging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am of the view that Mrs Bird took the first opportunity to draw a line under the relationship with Ms Roberts on 29 January 2015, when she removed her as a friend on Facebook as she did not like Ms Roberts and would prefer not to have to deal with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roberts had worked for the business for over ten years but the majority of the alleged bullying behaviour had occurred between November 2013 and January 2015. She claimed that it left her unable to sleep, depressed and highly anxious, requiring medication from her GP and psychologist.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts claimed she was treated differently to other employees, not greeted or acknowledged when other employees were, not allowed to adjust the thermostat settings when others were and forced to wear a uniform which did not fit properly.
