{"id":21713,"date":"2015-08-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/ageism-to-blame-for-elderly-men-s-suicide\/"},"modified":"2015-08-25T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-25T00:00:00","slug":"ageism-to-blame-for-elderly-men-s-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/ageism-to-blame-for-elderly-men-s-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"Ageism to blame for elderly men\u2019s suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>\u201cStructural discrimination\u201d against the elderly and ageist attitudes contribute to an \u00ad\u201cobscenely high\u201d rate of suicides among Australia\u2019s oldest men, reports The Australian.<\/h3>\n<p>Concerns have deepened with the emergence of a NSW Health document admitting \u201ccontagious\u201d ageist attitudes led to health professionals \u201cunder-\u00adrecognising and under-treating and not reacting to (suicide) warning signs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Males aged 85 and over have the nation\u2019s highest suicide rates, with men in this age group three times more likely to kill themselves than the national average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very concerned that both misinformed or discriminatory attitudes and acts of omission, particularly in policy, service planning and media representation, contribute to some of these deaths,\u201d said the NSW Institute of Psychiatry director of psychiatry and mental health programs, Rod McKay.<\/p>\n<p>A NSW Health document seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Australian<\/a> suggests ageist attitudes, including a \u00adbelief depression is a \u201cnormal part of ageing\u201d, are being \u00ad\u201caccepted\u201d by clinicians, leading to warning signs not being heeded.
