At a media conference on Tuesday afternoon, James Hird said chairman Paul Little told him Essendon would never truly be free of the ASADA issue while he was coach.<\/h3>\n

UPDATE, 3:04pm:<\/h3>\n

Essendon have ousted James Hird as coach of the embattled club after his failure to arrest the Bombers’ alarming slide down the AFL ladder.<\/h3>\n

The Bombers announced the move in an open letter to fans on the club’s website, saying Hird resigned after talks with the club’s board.<\/p>\n

Essendon chairman Paul Little wrote that while Hird would always be remembered as club champion, the side had failed this season.<\/p>\n

“Our on-field performances in 2015 have clearly been unacceptable,” he said.<\/p>\n

“As the season progressed, it has become increasingly apparent to the board that change was needed.<\/p>\n

“To his credit, James has always accepted that he is ultimately accountable for the performance of the team.”<\/p>\n

Little said there were “mitigating factors” for the Bombers’ poor showing in 2015, “including injuries to key players and the ASADA\/WADA process”.<\/p>\n

“However, across every measure, season 2015 has fallen well short of our expectations, and James’ expectations,” he said.<\/p>\n

Little said a confidential settlement had been reached with Hird, and that assistant Matthew Egan would coach the club for the remaining three matches of the season.<\/p>\n

Little also announced his own plans to leave the role as the club’s chairman when the club’s WADA proceedings were over.<\/p>\n

EARLIER<\/strong><\/p>\n

The board of AFL club Essendon has reportedly agreed to part ways with controversial coach James Hird, with an announcement imminent.<\/p>\n

Fairfax Media reports the club will announce the departure of Hird on Tuesday afternoon, three days after a 112-point loss to Adelaide.<\/p>\n

Hird is contracted as coach of the club that he captained to the 2000 premiership until the end of next season.<\/p>\n

James Hird, chairman Paul Little and CEO Xavier Campbell are scheduled to hold a press conference at the True Value Solar Centre at 2.45pm (SA time).<\/p>\n

The Bombers are sitting a lowly 15th on the AFL with just five wins this season.<\/p>\n

They remain beset by the “supplements scandal” that has dogged them for two-and-a-half years, with up to 20 players awaiting the re-hearing of anti-doping charges in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in November.<\/p>\n

Hird, 42, took over as head coach in 2011.<\/p>\n

Sports scientist Stephen Dank started working at the club in 2011 and was behind the supplements program that began in 2012 and has brought the club such misery.<\/p>\n
