Eddie McGuire caused a stir over the weekend when it emerged he had called Victorian sports minister John Eren a \u201csoccer loving Turkish born Mussie\u201d during a meeting in March.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe quote that I said, because I referred (in) this to the Minister himself, is as a \u2018soccer loving Turkish born Mussie\u2019 to emphasise the point that no longer do we have an Anglo Saxon former AFL footballer as the sports minister,\u201d McGuire said in defence of the comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause \u2018Mussies\u2019 (is) the way that my Muslim friends refer to themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you should go around calling people the old insulting terms, but the terms that show you are a friend,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

McGuire\u2019s comment has triggered a national debate, and on Monday he remained adamant the term was a perfectly acceptable one to use.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to my Muslim friends and they see it as a term of endearment. I checked with them again after the story came out to make sure I wasn\u2019t barking up the wrong tree and they laughed. Certainly John [Eren] has got no issue with it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It was reported over the weekend that Mr Eren had not been offended by the comment.<\/p>\n

But he said: \u201cThis is a timely reminder that leaders in the community need to be careful about how they express themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a fellow Broadmeadows boy, I\u2019ve known Eddie a long time. I\u2019m sure he didn\u2019t mean anything by it,\u201d Mr Eren said.<\/p>\n
