The internet is FREAKING OUT over this photo.<\/h3>\n

It started when NASA uploaded this picture taken by the Mars Rover.<\/p>\n

Nothing suspect, right? Just a pile of rocks.<\/p>\n

But in high-resolution, the image apparently shows some kind of creature guarding one of the cave entrances. T<\/span>he image has done the rounds on social media and has since gone viral.<\/p>\n

This picture, showing a very zoomed in version of the original image, was shared by the Journey to the Surface of Mars Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What is that?!!<\/p>\n

Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the Center for SETI Research, said he put down the apparent appearance of the ‘space crab’ to a phenomenon called pareidolia.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same effect that causes people to see animals in clouds \u2013 it\u2019s because of the brain’s preference to see shapes in random objects.<\/p>\n

He says he gets sent similar images showing formations like the crab about once a week.<\/p>\n

“Those that send them to me are generally quite excited, as they claim that these frequently resemble something you wouldn’t expect to find on the rusty, dusty surface of the Red Planet.<\/p>\n

“It’s usually some sort of animal, but occasionally even weirder objects such as automobile parts. Maybe they think there are cars on Mars.”<\/p>\n

He added: “Recognizing a crab in a landscape filled with wind-weathered rocks is no more surprising — nor more significant — than seeing a winking face in a semi-colon followed by a parenthesis. ;)\u201d<\/p>\n
