NASA has discovered a planet that is not so far from here, and very similar to Earth.<\/h3>\n

Kepler-452b is Earth\u2019s closest twin, according to NASA.<\/p>\n

The Earth like planet orbits star every 385 days and has a radius 60 per cent bigger than our planet, and a likely mass of 5-times Earth.<\/p>\n

The discovery raises the question once more of \u201care we alone in the universe?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking one small step in answering that question today,\u201d NASA said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil about 20-years ago, we didn\u2019t know the answer to that. Now we have a definitive answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we\u2019re announcing the discovery of an exoplanet that as far as we can tell, is a pretty close cousin to the Earth and our sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is about the closest twin to Earth 2.0 that we\u2019ve found so far, and I really emphasise so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

The planet is 1400 light years away, and located in the \u201cGoldilocks zone\u201d, which is where life could exist because it isn\u2019t too hot or too cold to support water in liquid form. The star it orbits looks to be an older version of our Sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cKepler-452b is orbiting a close cousin of our Sun, but one that is 1.5 billion years older,\u201d A NASA statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d also expect the atmosphere to be thicker and with more cloud cover, with very active volcanoes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know little about the atmosphere about this planet, it certainly has an atmosphere but details of its composition are totally unknown to us,\u201d Jon Jenkins from the Kepler data analysis team at NASA\u2019s Ames Research Centre in California told News.com.au.<\/p>\n

Could we inhabit the planet?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is humankind\u2019s first step,\u201d said Kepler research scientist Jeff Coughlin.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a long-term goal but a very exciting one.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou and I probably won\u2019t be travelling to these planets \u2014 but our children\u2019s children could be. This gives us something to aim for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne generation from now we might be able to get there. It gives humankind something to shoot for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is there already life on the planet?<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a hard question to answer, we\u2019re taking steps about as aggressively as technology will permit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really don\u2019t know what (a civilisation) would use, if there is something better than radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll stick with what we do know and keep listening. If down the road we find something better we\u2019ll use that.\u201d<\/p>\n
