A still-shaken Mick Fanning will never again hit the surf on July 19, his terrifying attack by a shark at Jeffreys Bay forever staining the date in his memory.<\/h3>\n

The three-time world champion still isn’t sure if he’ll ever return to the South African spot or even continue his world title race, but is positive that one particular square on his calendar will be surf-free.<\/p>\n

Fanning will touch down in Australia on Tuesday after he made headlines around the world for his run-in with the shark, believed to be a great white, during the final of the World Surf League (WSL) event.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old Gold Coaster punched the feared predator and used his board as a shield before rescue crews pulled him and Australian rival Julian Wilson from the water to safety.<\/p>\n

A day after the dramatic events unfolded on live TV, Fanning admits he’s mentally still “a bloody mess” and just feels lucky to be alive – though was also left with the impression he’d attended his own funeral.<\/p>\n

“A bunch of friends from the tour – competitors and administrators – came by my place to make sure I was really in one piece,” he said in an interview with Red Bull.<\/p>\n

“We had a few drinks to celebrate and some dinner.<\/p>\n

“There was a lot of love and relief, but it was so strange though – it felt like I was at my own wake, to be honest.<\/p>\n

“I got some sleep but it was a pretty restless night.”<\/p>\n

Fanning said he’s watched the video replay of his chillingly close call over and over, and can’t get his head around the fact that his friends and family, including his distraught mother, had to endure an agonisingly long few seconds of not knowing whether he would make it.<\/p>\n

“That’s one of the scariest factors, and what really gets me emotional,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s surreal watching it play out.<\/p>\n

“It’s like, `Did that really happen to me?’ I just can’t believe I’ve come through this completely unscathed physically,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Mentally I’m a bloody mess, but I’ll come good in time.”<\/p>\n

While his ordeal has made him understandably wary of surfing at Jeffreys Bay in the future, Fanning insists he’ll always love the unique waves the spot offers.<\/p>\n

“Nothing could ever change that. The wave is like no other, the people are pure gold and it’s maybe my favourite stop on the schedule,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’m not thinking about whether I’ll go back at the moment. We’ll see how I feel. I’ll never surf on July 19 again, though.”<\/p>\n

Fanning thanked Wilson for bravely disregarding his own safety to try and rescue his friend via a heartfelt post social media a day after the incident.<\/p>\n

“This man came to my aid like a warrior!!,” Fanning wrote of Wilson in an Instagram post.<\/p>\n

“It was by far the scariest thing I have ever been through and am still rattled.<\/p>\n

“In our sport we always think about sharks and know we are in their domain.<\/p>\n

“Jbay is an incredible place and I will go back one day.”<\/p>\n
