An elderly woman, believed to be at least 90, got the shock of a lifetime after a stint in hospital due to a fall, in the Chilean city of San Antonio.<\/h3>\n

When doctors undertook X-ray tests on the woman, the BBC reports they revealed the presence of a foetus, weighing around 2kgs.<\/p>\n

The woman had reportedly been carrying the foetus for nearly 50 years. It had become calcified to the outside the uterus after dying during pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Dr Marco Vargas Lazo, the director of the hospital, told the Efe news agency, that the foetus was “large and developed and occupied all of her abdominal cavity.”<\/p>\n

He called the case “extraordinarily rare.”<\/p>\n

Such incidents are a medical phenomenon known as a lithopedion and there have previous recorded cases of other women being unaware of the presence of the foetus for decades.<\/p>\n

The woman has been sent home, safe and well, however due to her age, and the risks that surgery would entail, doctors say that it\u2019s unlikely that they will attempt to remove the foetus.<\/p>\n
