Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev broke his long silence for the first time this week, admitting his guilt as he was formally sentenced to death.<\/h3>\n

Tsarnaev, 21 asked Allah to help his victims and their families and apologised for the pain and suffering he caused two years ago.<\/p>\n

“I am sorry for the lives that I’ve taken, for the suffering that I’ve caused you, for the damage that I’ve done. Irreparable damage,” Tsarnaev said.<\/p>\n

He added, “I prayed for Allah to bestow his mercy upon the deceased, those affected in the bombing and their families. Allah says in the Quran that with every hardship there is relief. I pray for your relief, for your healing, for your well-being, for your strength.”<\/p>\n

He also prayed for Allah to show mercy to him and his brother.<\/p>\n

\"Tsarnaev<\/p>\n

Dzhokhar and older brother Tamerlan (who died while fleeing police) detonated two bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon in April 2013, killing two women, an eight-year-old boy and injuring over 260 people.<\/p>\n

A jury decided six weeks ago that Tsarnaev should be put to death for his crime. This week\u2019s court hearing was his opportunity to make a statement, after choosing not to testify during his trial, as Judge George O’Toole formally sentenced him to die by injection.<\/p>\n

His apology was met with mixed reactions from victims.<\/p>\n

Boston local Lynn Julian, who suffered hearing damage and permanent injuries as a result of the bombings said: “He threw in an apology to the survivors that seemed insincere. What he said showed no regret, no remorse.”<\/p>\n

Henry Borgard, who suffered minor injuries and PTSD after visiting Boston at the time, of the attacks, had a different perspective.<\/p>\n

“To hear him say he’s sorry, that is enough for me,” said Borgard. “I hope his words were genuine, I hope his words were heartfelt.”<\/p>\n
