Fresh in our memories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tribute was lampooned and met with some outrage on Twitter on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/screen_shot_2015-04-15_at_8.05.25_am.png\" width=\"509\" height=\"486\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/screen_shot_2015-04-15_at_8.05.37_am.png\" width=\"511\" height=\"487\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Fresh in Our Memories website has been taken down this evening,&#8221; Woolworths said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We regret that our branding on the picture generator has caused offence, this was clearly never our intention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like many heritage Australian companies, we were marking our respect for ANZAC and our veterans.<\/p>\n<p>The food retailer said the site was developed to give staff and customers a place to put their stories to mark the Centenary of ANZAC.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/screen_shot_2015-04-15_at_8.01.00_am.png\" width=\"847\" height=\"312\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But social media users were sceptical.<\/p>\n<p>Under the hashtag #brandzacday, users ran photos of Tony Abbott eating an onion, pets, pop stars and even Hitler through the Woolworths website before posting them on Twitter as memes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/screen_shot_2015-04-15_at_8.11.07_am.png\" width=\"512\" height=\"489\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey @woolworths, this marketing campaign is really crass,&#8221; said @mattburke.<\/p>\n<p>@danieleade said he found the advertising and slogans to be insulting to Australian diggers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When brands look to leverage timely dates but end up creating content that is blatant commercialism #FreshInOurMemories #brandzacday #fail,&#8221; tweeted @FrancesDwyer.<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier statement, Woolworths denied the commemoration was a marketing ploy and defended its record of raising money for the Returned Services League (RSL).<\/p>\n<p>Woolworths said its small logo on the site is in line with other corporately sponsored Centenary of ANZAC activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/david-mark-jane\/patrick-dangerfield-spills-on-phil-walsh\">DANGERFIELD SPILLS THE BEANS ON PHIL WALSH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/her-husband-doesn-t-look-like-this-anymore\">HER HUSBAND DOESN&#8217;T LOOK LIKE THIS ANYMORE!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Images | Twitter Woolworths have taken down an Anzac commemoration website after it attracted criticism for inviting users to share tributes of war dead under the slogan &#8220;fresh in our memories&#8221;.
