MELBOURNE<\/strong><\/p>\n

An autistic boy who survived five days lost in Victorian bushland is suffering from hypothermia and dehydration, and police say it is a miracle he was found alive.<\/h3>\n

Luke Shambrook, 11, was discovered just before noon on Tuesday walking in bush 3km from the campsite where he was last seen on Good Friday in Lake Eildon National Park.<\/p>\n

Victoria Police Acting Commander Rick Nugent said the searchers were overjoyed the boy had been found.<\/p>\n

“To spot him now is an absolute relief and the joy by all of us that he’s been found is just hard to describe,” he told reporters at the scene.<\/p>\n

“In some ways it’s a miracle.”<\/p>\n

A police helicopter saw Luke in thick bushland and rough terrain. He is suffering from hypothermia, dehydration and has a few scratches.<\/p>\n

Paramedics will treat him before rescue crews move him from the area.<\/p>\n

The dog squad, air wing and mounted branch took part in the five-day search of Lake Eildon National Park in often cold and wet conditions, as did campers and 40 other civilian volunteers from nearby towns.<\/p>\n

A beanie found on Monday renewed hopes Luke would be found alive because it indicated he had walked away from water, and was the only item of clothing he had lost during the five days he was missing.<\/p>\n

It gave police a reference point from which line searches were conducted at Devil’s Cove.<\/p>\n

His family had warned searchers it was possible Luke did not know he was lost because of his autism.<\/p>\n

Mr Nugent said the Shambrook family was overwhelmed with the news and passed on their appreciation to those who too part in the search.<\/p>\n
