Former prime minister Malcolm Fraser has died at the age of 84.<\/h3>\n

Malcolm Fraser has been remembered as a man of compassion and controversy.<\/p>\n

The former Liberal prime minister, who served from 1975 to 1983, died on Friday at the age of 84 after a short illness.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the nation’s 22nd leader had restored economically responsible government while recognising social change.<\/p>\n

In recent years, Mr Fraser made peace with former Labor leader Gough Whitlam, who died in October 2014.<\/p>\n

The pair are indelibly joined in Australian political history as key figures in what has become known as the dismissal.<\/p>\n

In paying tribute to Mr Fraser, former Labor prime minister Paul Keating said the constitutional crisis of 1975 had rewritten the rule book of Australian public life.<\/p>\n

“He made peace with Gough Whitlam. I would like to think had he had his time over, he would have let the 1974 parliament run its course,” Mr Keating said.<\/p>\n

Former prime minister Julia Gillard said the death closed a chapter of political history.<\/p>\n

\"Malcolm<\/p>\n

“With the loss of the great Gough Whitlam last year, the chapter in our nation’s history that included the controversy of the dismissal has closed,” she said.<\/p>\n

“However, our memories of that era encompass far more than the days of the constitutional crisis and today we remember all of Malcolm Fraser’s life and works with respect.”<\/p>\n

Mr Abbott said Mr Fraser had held true to the belief that his actions at the time of the dismissal were in the best interests of Australia.<\/p>\n

“The greatest win in Australian political history confirms that he had correctly read the mood of the public,” he said of Mr Fraser’s landslide election win following Mr Whitlam’s 1975 dismissal.<\/p>\n

Former prime minister and Fraser government treasurer John Howard said Mr Fraser had brought calm and reassurance in the wake of the dismissal.<\/p>\n

However, they had disagreed on the best ways to move the Australian economy forward.<\/p>\n

“I think he had a view about economic policy that was rooted in the relative success, the considerable success, of the 1950s and 60s,” Mr Howard said.<\/p>\n

Under Mr Fraser’s leadership, the Northern Territory achieved self-government, freedom of information was enacted, human rights were put into law and the first Australian sites were put on the World Heritage list.<\/p>\n

He also resettled tens of thousands of Vietnamese people fleeing the war and took a strong stance against South Africa’s apartheid.<\/p>\n

“Prime Minister Fraser will be remembered as a compassionate Australian, who cared for people at home or abroad, who had little or nothing to protect them,” former Labor prime minister Kevin Rudd said.<\/p>\n

The current longest-serving member of parliament, Philip Ruddock, said those who had “discouraging” memories of the dismissal “should remember Malcolm as a liberal on issues of race and human rights”.<\/p>\n

In his post-political life, Mr Fraser founded the organisation CARE and regularly headed to hot spots to personally oversee humanitarian crisis missions.<\/p>\n

In December 2009, Mr Fraser quit the Liberal Party saying it was more conservative than liberal.<\/p>\n

In his final years he was active on Twitter, raising human rights issues and criticising government and opposition policy.<\/p>\n

He is survived by wife Tamie and their four children.<\/p>\n

A statement says Mr Fraser died in the early hours of Friday after a short illness.<\/p>\n

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that after a brief illness John Malcolm Fraser died peacefully in the early hours of the morning of 20 March 2015,” the statement from Mr Fraser’s office said.<\/p>\n

“We appreciate that this will be a shock to all who knew and loved him, but ask that the family be left in peace at this difficult time.”<\/p>\n

Mr Fraser served as prime minister from November 1975 until 1983.<\/p>\n

Treasurer Joe Hockey said Mr Fraser contributed to building a better Australia.<\/p>\n

“These events just indicate how in one way or another we all stand on the shoulders of those that were before us,” Mr Hockey said on Friday.<\/p>\n

“Right or wrong, many people have contributed to public life over a long period of time that have helped to build a better Australia and unquestionably he was one of them. So we pass on our condolences.”<\/p>\n
