Fremantle believe a painkiller was responsible for tagger Ryan Crowley returning a positive test for a banned substance last year – but it wasn’t issued by the club.<\/h3>\n

Crowley’s AFL career hangs in the balance after he returned the positive test following the club’s round 17 win over GWS last season.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear what Crowley tested positive for.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old was issued with a show-cause notice last September, after which time he accepted a provisional suspension.<\/p>\n

Crowley is awaiting a hearing date to appear before the AFL Tribunal over the matter.<\/p>\n

“Based on our understanding of the matter, the banned substance was contained in a painkiller,” Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said on Monday.<\/p>\n

“The painkiller was not prescribed by a Fremantle staff member or club doctor.<\/p>\n

“Ryan has had instances where he’s had to take painkillers in the past.”<\/p>\n

Crowley struggled with back problems last year, and he underwent surgery once the club exited the finals in straight sets.<\/p>\n

The 188-game veteran’s mysterious absence from pre-season games drew widespread questions last week, but the ASADA revelations have shed light on the matter.<\/p>\n

Fremantle issued a statement where it said: “The commencement of the provisional suspension is not an admission of guilt or wrongdoing.”<\/p>\n

Until the AFL Tribunal convenes and makes a finding, Crowley is allowed to train with his teammates during the provisional suspension.<\/p>\n

Crowley has appointed independent legal advisers to assist him with the matter.<\/p>\n

“I would like to thank my partner Samara, my family and the club for their support over the past few months. It has been invaluable,” Crowley said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n

“I have my own legal advisers working on the matter and they have also been a great support.<\/p>\n

“I will continue to fully co-operate on this matter with ASADA and the AFL. At this stage, I’m looking forward to the AFL Tribunal hearing taking place.”<\/p>\n

Fremantle president Steve Harris said it was crucial that the club provide Crowley with all the necessary support to deal with the matter.<\/p>\n

“We have a continuing and ongoing duty of care for Ryan, both personally and professionally,” Harris said.<\/p>\n

“Ryan’s ongoing health and capacity to cope with this matter have been key areas of focus for the support we have been providing him with.”<\/p>\n
