{"id":24602,"date":"2015-02-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-20T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/hunt-career-in-air-after-cocaine-charges\/"},"modified":"2015-02-20T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-20T00:00:00","slug":"hunt-career-in-air-after-cocaine-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/sport\/hunt-career-in-air-after-cocaine-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Hunt career in air after cocaine charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ed Jackson,&nbsp;BRISBANE<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Code-hopping rugby union player Karmichael Hunt is facing charges of supplying cocaine, with two Gold Coast NRL players also reportedly implicated.<\/h3>\n<p>The charges against the Queensland Reds vice-captain follow an operation by Queensland&#8217;s Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) and he was arrested on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>The CCC released a statement on Friday morning which said they had charged four people &#8211; three men and a woman &#8211; as part of an investigation into a cocaine trafficking syndicate in southeast Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>Hunt, 28, a former NRL and AFL player, is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on March 5.<\/p>\n<p>News Corp reported that the two other men arrested, a 24-year-old and a 27-year-old, are Gold Coast Titans players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During an investigation focused on a cocaine trafficking syndicate operating in southeast Queensland, these four individuals were identified contacting the syndicate and arranging for the supply of cocaine,&#8221; the CCC said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/screen_shot_2015-02-20_at_3.20.33_pm.png\" width=\"636\" height=\"347\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Image | Twitter<\/h6>\n<p>The revelation shocked both the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) and the Australian Rugby Union (ARU), who were scrambling to respond to the news.<\/p>\n<p>The Queensland Reds were in crisis mode with costly off-season signing Hunt having been named to play at fullback against the Western Force at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>The ARU and QRU released a joint statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ARU&#8217;s Integrity team and the Queensland Rugby Union are making enquiries into the reports,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll be in a position to comment in more detail once those enquiries have progressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Titans chief executive Graham Annesley had no knowledge of the arrests but says the club is investigating the reports.<\/p>\n<p>Hunt&#8217;s former AFL club Gold Coast released a statement shortly after the ARU and QRU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Gold Coast Suns have been made aware of charges laid against Karmichael Hunt through the media reports this morning,&#8221; the club said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As this matter is now before the court, it would be inappropriate to make any comment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If proven, the charges threaten to end a glittering sporting career just when Hunt appeared in the mix to cap it by playing for the Wallabies at the Rugby World Cup later this year.<\/p>\n<p>A former rugby league international and Brisbane Broncos NRL star, Hunt joined the Reds this season following his four-year stint in the AFL.<\/p>\n<p>The time frame of the alleged offences between June and December covers the period when Hunt was at the Suns and then joined the Reds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/rowey-bicks\/caroline-wiloson-meets-with-adelaide-crows\">CARO MEETS WITH CROWS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/rowey-bicks\/big-year-for-nathan-van-berlo\">BIG YEAR AHEAD FOR VAN BERLO<\/a><\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ed Jackson,&nbsp;BRISBANE Code-hopping rugby union player Karmichael Hunt is facing charges of supplying cocaine, with two Gold Coast NRL players also reportedly implicated.
