A teenage girl at a US high school has been left embarrassed after her school forced her to cover up at a school dance.<\/h3>\n

15-year-old Gabi Finlayson bought a stunning lace dress from Paris inspired by Audrey Hepburn for her school dance.<\/p>\n

When she turned up at the dance, teachers told her it violated the dress code, and she was forced to cover up. Gabi said she was “embarrassed” and “insulted” when school officials approached her during the dance.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t want to make a big scene so I said yes. I had a coat in the car so I had to go back and get it,” Gabi told KUTV.<\/p>\n

“Somehow my shoulders are sexualised. Like it’s my responsibility to make sure the boys’ thoughts are not unclean.”<\/p>\n

School principal Rhonda Bromley was quick to defend the decision, saying students are aware of the school’s dress policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Formals, backless dresses and\/or tops may not extend beyond the bottom of the shoulder blades.”<\/p>\n

“Girls’ dresses and tops must have a 2 inch minimum strap on each shoulder. Shawls, boleros and other shrugs are acceptable if worn over the dress at all times. Cleavage covered.”<\/p>\n

Of 1200 other students, four others were made to cover up.<\/p>\n

Gabi’s mum is furious, and says the policy is dated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very disheartened to learn she (Gabi) was shamed at the entrance of the dance and told she couldn\u2019t enter without a sweater or coat to cover her shoulders. Seriously?!\u201d she wrote on her Facebook page.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is wearing a perfectly appropriate and classic dress we bought in Paris and somehow because her shoulders were not covered she was body shamed and embarrassed? Makes me wonder if this really isn\u2019t about wanting girls to dress in LDS garment-worthy clothing. Let\u2019s stop this insanity. Girls bodies are not sexual objects and religious perspectives should not be imposed at a public school. Shoulders are not sexual!!!\u201d<\/p>\n
