Courageous Rosie Batty is determined to expose and end domestic violence in Australia, ensuring her son Luke did not die in vain.<\/h3>\n

The Victorian, whose 11-year-old son was murdered by his father at cricket training almost a year ago, was named Australian of the Year 2015 on Sunday in recognition of her campaigning against domestic violence in spite of overwhelming personal grief.<\/p>\n

“I would like to dedicate this award to my beautiful son, Luke. He is the reason I have found my voice and I’m able to be heard,” an emotional Ms Batty said after receiving the award from Prime Minister Tony Abbott on the lawns in front of Parliament House.<\/p>\n

Family violence may happen behind closed doors but it needs to be brought out from the shadows and into broad daylight, she said.<\/p>\n

As Australian of the Year Ms Batty will continue to expose family violence and to ensure that victims receive the respect, support and safety they deserve.<\/p>\n

“And to Luke, my little man, you did not die in vain and will not be forgotten. You are beside me on this journey,” she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Batty, 52, beat seven other finalists including Deborra-lee Furness, from NSW, who was nominated for her work as an adoption advocate.<\/p>\n

For the first time in the award’s 55-year history, all four honours went to women.<\/p>\n

Author Jackie French, 61, is Senior Australian of the Year after overcoming dyslexia to become a tireless advocate for children with learning difficulties.<\/p>\n

Young Australian of the Year is Drisana Levitzke-Gray, 21, who has travelled the world advocating for deaf rights and pushing for deaf children to have access to Auslan – the sign language of the Australian deaf community – from birth.<\/p>\n

The Local Hero award went to Queenslander Juliette Wright, whose website GIVIT made a big difference alleviating poverty and distributing goods to the needy during the 2011 Queensland floods.<\/p>\n

Earlier Mr Abbott told the 32 candidates for the awards they were all worthy and would do Australia proud.<\/p>\n

“Some of you have inspired us, others have challenged, all of you have amazed us,” Mr Abbott said.<\/p>\n

“You are proof that there is no limit to what Australians can achieve.”<\/p>\n

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten hopes some day Australians can achieve a republic.<\/p>\n

On the eve of Australia Day, he reignited debate for a republic after calling for new life to be breathed into the dream of an Australian head of state.<\/p>\n

“Let us rally behind an Australian republic – a model that truly speaks for who we are: our modern identity, our place in our region and our world,” he said in Melbourne.”<\/p>\n
