Adelaide City Councillor Robert Simms spoke on Tuesday\u2019s FIVEAA Breakfast show about the idea, which was temporarily trialled in Sydney at a cost for $250,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a way of improving pedestrian safety,\u201d Mr Simms said. \u201cWe do have lots of people now becoming a bit more distracted on our roads as a result of technology, but it\u2019s also potentially beneficial for people that might have vision impairment or may not be that familiar with traffic light systems.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just an added level of safety and awareness, particularly on very busy roads\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cAll I\u2019m asking for is an investigation\u2026 to come back to the council with some costs and some potential locations. If as a result of that investigation we say the juice isn\u2019t worth the squeeze, then we don\u2019t need to proceed with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
But Penbo refused to accept pedestrians were unable to get off their phones even for a minute — \u201conly if your so brain dead that you would rather being looking at your phone than working out what\u2019s going on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIsn\u2019t it almost in the Darwinian theory of natural selection? If people are so stupid that they\u2019re going to do this, why are we going to have some vast outlay of ratepayers\u2019 money to save people from their own stupidity.<\/p>\n
