Former Prime Minister John Howard has slammed Labor opposition leader Bill Shorten for attempting to \u201cdivide the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

“I think where Bill Shorten went wrong was to try and divide the country. We are not driven by class. We treat people equally,” Mr Howard said.<\/p>\n

“Bob Hawke was a great labour prime minister but he did not try to divide the country on class rights, whereas Bill Shorten, with this big end of town stuff, you are all the big end of town if you try to work for your bob according to Bill Shorten.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Analyst Michael Rowland tells the ABC Labor cannot form majority government but the Coalition can:<\/p>\n

“At the moment, it is hard to see how Labor can reach government on the numbers we are seeing. We have 27.5% of the national vote counted.<\/p>\n

“That’s what the pre-poll has done. It has lowered the amount of vote we are looking at at this time of night.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think the pre-poll will turn around the trend in Queensland and Victoria.<\/p>\n

“At the moment, the Labor Party can’t reach majority government.<\/p>\n

“The Liberal Party can.<\/p>\n

“Whether they do or not is where the pre-poll vote will become important. At this stage, it is very hard to see anything other than the Coalition staying in government but we don’t know whether that is a majority or minority government.<\/p>\n

Labor appears on track to defeat the Morrison coalition government this federal election.<\/p>\n

A Nine exit poll on Saturday gave Labor a 52-48 two-party preferred lead over the coalition, which could deliver it as many as 82 seats in the 151-seat lower house.<\/p>\n

Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek said the party, which went into the election with 69 seats, had “high hopes” to pick up 12 seats it had been targeting.<\/p>\n
