High school sweethearts Hayden Perkins, 17, and his passenger Mikayla Eastwood, 18, were killed on Tuesday afternoon when the collided with an oncoming vehicle.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis story is just beyond sad,\u201d Penbo told the FIVEAA breakfast show on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy parents came very close to sustaining pretty serious injuries themselves a few years ago on Long Valley Road. The car that they were travelling behind — as mum tells the story — it was like it suddenly blew up.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt turned out it had collided head on with an oncoming vehicle. A sole female occupant and a sole male occupant of both those vehicles lost their lives straight away.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy parents were standing there, my dad and another bloke were comforting the bloke who was on his own in a car — nothing they could do.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd this is another double fatality on this same stretch of road within five years. People within the Strathalbyn and Callington area regard this road as a death trap.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy don\u2019t we say, alright, unless city road projects are essential on public safety ground or are already underway\u2026 we are going to put a line through city road spending for the next two years and switch the dial the other way in the direction of regional and rural communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere in the city we are all moaning about the fact that there\u2019s some frivolous road works underway\u2026 yet in the country in regional towns people there say if they don\u2019t fix that road someone\u2019s going to die.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s the most important? Switch it over the country roads.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
