\u201cIt was quite clear at that point they were struggling for an infrastructure election pledge,\u201d Smitho told FIVEAA\u2019s Leon Byner on Monday. \u201cThey needed a big, bold project to grab the public\u2019s attention to win power.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe $37 million that was put forward as the cost then was the most unreliable, flimsy figure done by a parliamentary team that looks into rough costings. It was the roughest of rough costings, so you would say don\u2019t rely on that figure.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was even said to them that it could be a lot more than this.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m flabbergasted. I don\u2019t often get angry at the politics of a situation but this was one where we\u2019ve wasted time, money and effort on something that was never going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
