An indigenous woman from the Facebook page that called out the prize-winning golliwogs that were later removed<\/a> from the Royal Adelaide Show says the dolls should never have been allowed into competition in the first place.<\/h3>\n

\u201cI don think they should\u2019ve been entered in the first place,\u201d Janette Milera from the Deadly Yarning From South Australian Aboriginal Communities FB page told FIVEAA\u2019s Alan Hickey on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you know the history of black and white minstrels and the connotations around that with African Americans you would know they were racist connotations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe character wasn\u2019t a good character. It hasn\u2019t been depicted as a good character — not good connotations towards people of colour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get that they were trying to showcase their craftsmanship through these dolls, but there are plenty of other dolls you could make to show your craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

\u201cGolliwog dolls are not culturally made\u2026 with a cultural mind set, where the other dolls are and their dress codes are.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing I don\u2019t get is how the Royal Adelaide show could allow — they should have some knowledge these dolls and the connotations… as exhibitors they need to take some responsibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole point is being missed. When people of colour find something offensive, non-people of colour tell us it\u2019s not offensive. It\u2019s really hard for us as people of colour to be told by non-people of colour — who do not deal with racism everyday — that we don\u2019t know what we\u2019re talking about, we\u2019re being too sensitive, we need to just relax a bit.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day I wake up to something on TV, on the radio involving Aboriginal people in a bad way. Why are we still dealing with Aboriginal people being put in negative connotations?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
