{"id":28048,"date":"2018-07-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/penalties-for-cannabis-could-soon-be-the-same-as-for-heroin\/"},"modified":"2018-07-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T00:00:00","slug":"penalties-for-cannabis-could-soon-be-the-same-as-for-heroin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/penalties-for-cannabis-could-soon-be-the-same-as-for-heroin\/","title":{"rendered":"Penalties For Cannabis Could Soon Be The Same As For Heroin"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Cannabis would be bumped up to the same status as other drugs like ecstasy and heroin as part of a new state government plan.<\/h3>\n<p>New laws being pushed by Attorney-General Vickie Chapman would see the penalty for possession of cannabis upgraded to a max fine of $2,000 and two years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Chapman has told FIVEAA the inquest into Lewis McPherson\u2019s shooting death by a man under the influence of cannabis was the \u201ctrigger to us looking at this issue\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><h3>\u201cIt does have serious consequence when people are under the influence,\u201d Ms Chapman said on Monday. \u201cIs it appropriate that it has a much less penalty than other drugs? We say no. The coroner says no. We bring this into line.\u201d<\/h3>\n<h3>\u201cEssentially they\u2019re catching up with the other form of controlled drugs like methamphetamine and the like. For decades now cannabis has slipped through the net as far as advancing penalties. In the McPherson case it was highlighted this is a very dangerous drug.<\/h3>\n<h3>\u201cIt can\u2019t be underestimated. We\u2019ve had a murder here by a young man under the influence of cannabis.
