Senator Nick Xenophon has criticised a new ad from online bookmaker Sportsbet, calling the spot \u201cwrong at so many levels\u201d.<\/h3>\n

The ad features disgraced Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson spruiking the business\u2019s new phone app — which it says puts the \u2018roid in Android.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey make fun of it, but what he did was very serious,\u201d Nick Xenophon told Jade Robran on FIVEAA. \u201cTo be involved in any form of doping is pretty bad news, but at the highest level — at the Olympic Games — was a shocker. It was a worldwide scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the ad \u201cmakes light\u201d of doping and steroid use:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s basically saying its ok to cheat. Kids will see this ad. It breaches the gambling code here in South Australia and also federal advertising standards code.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to do a funny ad\u2026 but we\u2019re talking about a gambling product here. It just fails the test at so many levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Johnson was reportedly paid around $200,000 to appear in the ad:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s basically being rewarded for doping,\u201d Xenophon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should be be profiting from something as bad as doping? Doping is what ruins the integrity of sports. Combining it with a gambling ad\u2026 it really just breaks all the rules in terms of community standards, the impact it has on kids\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what they were thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sportsbet says it has no plans to pull the ad: \u201cWe\u2019ve received overwhelmingly positive support from the public and they see it for what it is, a tongue-in-cheek joke,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n
