{"id":29731,"date":"2017-05-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/politician-calls-for-parents-to-keep-the-right-to-smack\/"},"modified":"2017-05-07T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-07T00:00:00","slug":"politician-calls-for-parents-to-keep-the-right-to-smack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/politician-calls-for-parents-to-keep-the-right-to-smack\/","title":{"rendered":"Politician calls for parents to keep the right to smack"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>State politician Dennis Hood is calling for parents to retain the right to smack their kids and says \u201cleft-wing academics\u201d have tried to blur the lines between smacking and abuse.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI was certainly smacked when I was brought up as a child, and it didn\u2019t do me any harm,\u201d Mr Hood told David and Will on FIVEAA. \u201cWe have also smacked our daughter on occasion &#8212; rarely, I must say, and only with the right motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>He said there were times when a smack was called for:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere are some children that just won\u2019t respond, or there are some circumstance where children just don\u2019t respond and where a smack is the most appropriate thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI advocate other means first &#8212; smacking should be a last resort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the Australian conservatives want to be sure of is that right isn\u2019t removed from parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/leon-byner\/it-s-time-for-australia-to-ban-smacking-children-says-qc\">Last week a QC called on Australia to ban smacking.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>But Mr Hood took aim at the \u201cleft-wing academics\u201d he said have confused abuse and discipline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople know the difference between a loving smack that\u2019s appropriate for disciplinary reasons as opposed to child abuse.
