QC Felicity Gerry has criticised Australia for not joining with the 49 other countries that have banned smacking.<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt is not acceptable for the UK, the USA and Australia to remain missing from the list,\u201d Ms Gerry said.<\/p>\n

According to The Australian<\/a>, an article co-written by Gerry in the International Journal of Child Rights <\/em>argues that \u201cthe defence of reasonable chastisement\u201d makes it difficult to spot abusive parents:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe removal of this defence would effectively remove the hidden nature of physical punishment of children and then allow for health and policy responses along with clear legal guidance on when to prosecute or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt does not teach children why their behaviour was wrong or what they should do instead,\u201d Gerry said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEither society must come to that conclusion itself and demand change, or if it cannot do this, the law-makers in that society must make the brave decision to change the untenable laws that permit child abuse in the form of physical punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n
