If they\u2019re serious about writing the Papua New Guinea history then setup up an Australian-PNG project at the war memorial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t get some politically correct contractor who\u2019s got\u2026 no record of military history at all to try and interpret it for us,\u201d Charlie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s part of a process to reinterpret the history of the Kokoda campaign and demilitarise it\u2026 People who go to Kokoda now have an environmental levitation instead of a wartime pilgrimage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVeterans\u2019 Affairs have abrogated their responsibility in this area. I just find it ludicrous that Veterans\u2019 Affairs have responsibility for Gallipoli, which is our WWI icon, and a totally separate Department of Environment has responsibility for Kokoda, which is our WWII icon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charlie &#8212; who has run Kokoda treks for the past 25 years &#8212; also said he had seen little evidence of women taking offence to the word \u2018mateship\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re as matey as anybody,\u201d he said. \u201cThey use the term amongst themselves. I don\u2019t see an issue with it.
