A Melbourne group\u2019s push for city pedestrian crossings to have an equal number of male and female walking signals has caused a stir.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe idea is to install traffic lights with female representation, as well as male representation, to help reduce unconscious bias,\u201d Martine Letts from the Committee for Melbourne said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe aim is to move towards one-to-one male and female representation across the state of Victoria.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city and we would really like to see Melbourne also known as the world’s most equal city.”<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people have expressed a little scepticism wondering whether it’s gesture politics rather than having any real substance…<\/p>\n

\u201cBut these symbols are a practical and meaningful way to demonstrate that in fact 50 per cent of our population is female and should therefore also be represented at traffic lights,\u201d Ms Letts said.<\/p>\n

But the plan has come in for criticism\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Miranda Devine told Leon Byner it was \u201cpolitical correctness\u2026 it\u2019s the usual garbage\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompletely misguided. Who cares and who even noticed that the figure was a man?\u201d Miranda said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes absolutely no sense because the walk symbol anyway is just a human wearing pants with short hair — how do you know that\u2019s not a women? How do you know that\u2019s not a transgender person? They\u2019re getting themselves all tied up in knots by being too politically correct.\u201d <\/p>\n

Miranda wasn\u2019t alone in knocking the idea.<\/p>\n

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m all for doing anything we can for gender equity, but really? Unfortunately, I think this sort of costly exercise is more likely to bring derision.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Evan Mulholland from the Institute of Public Affairs:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be putting their time and energy into fixing congestion on our roads (and) the Victorian Government should retreat from this politically correct trial and get on with practical solutions to deal with congestion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But Minister for Women Fiona Richardson was in favour:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many small but symbolically significant ways that women are excluded from public space,\u201d Ms Richardson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA culture of sexism is made up of very small issues, like how the default pedestrian crossings use a male figure — and large issues such as the rate of family violence facing women.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
