{"id":30087,"date":"2017-02-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/cory-bernardi-drops-a-bomb-and-some-former-pms-won-t-be-happy\/"},"modified":"2017-02-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T00:00:00","slug":"cory-bernardi-drops-a-bomb-and-some-former-pms-won-t-be-happy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/cory-bernardi-drops-a-bomb-and-some-former-pms-won-t-be-happy\/","title":{"rendered":"Cory Bernardi drops a bomb &#8212; and some former PMs won\u2019t be happy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Newly independent senator Cory Bernardi has vowed to \u201cpush the broom\u201d through Canberra as he calls for changes to the Life Gold Passes given to former PMs.<\/h3>\n<p>Currently all former Prime Ministers are entitled to a lifetime of taxpayer-funded business class travel, but Mr Bernardi wants to see only PMs who serve at least four years receive the perk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most recent crop of prime ministers over the last 10 years or so have delivered $20,000 worth of debt for every man woman and child in this country &#8212; we\u2019re $500 billion in debt,\u201d Mr Bernardi told David and Will on FIVEAA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yet they can survive the hunger games, get to the top job for six weeks or six months, and then retire with a lifetime worth of benefits, which I don\u2019t think are justified because the service to our country hasn\u2019t been particularly good over the last decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>LISTEN HERE:<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/307766803&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mr Bernardi said the major parties had \u201ctrashed\u201d the office of prime minister\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve treated it as a revolving door,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to restore some confidence back in the political system\u2026 because at the moment most Australians are looking and going they\u2019re not serving us properly, they\u2019re not doing the right thing, that things are getting worse and these guys (meaning us up here) seem to just be immune to any of the difficulties. And that\u2019s a real problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s only reasonable to push the broom right through this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last three PMs would lose their Life Gold Pass under the plan, but Mr Bernardi said he had not heard from any former PMs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately this will be decided by the senate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bernardi &#8212; who <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/former-colleague-unloads-on-turncoat-bernardi\"><strong>last week defected from the Liberal Party<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; said most of his former colleagues had \u201cthawed out a little bit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understood very clear their anger and disappointment\u2026 but since then cooler heads have prevailed in most instances.
