And it was bookended by an absolute lowlight when Jobe Watson handed back his Brownlow medal a couple of weeks ago. A terribly sad story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Melbourne cleanout<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cHandled appallingly, including the Boomer Harvey decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fall of Freo<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cWhat an absolute disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>QLD woes<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cThe devastating state of football in Queensland, and I include Brisbane\u2026 and obviously the Gary Ablett story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lachie Whitfield<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cThe fallout for Collingwood, especially with the whole Gubby Allan disaster, and how that could impact on their CEO and their coach and their chairman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hawks trade week bombshell<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cWould you\u2019ve believed they would have traded out Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis? Didn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Caro had \u201ca few goodies as well\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>**HIGHLIGHTS**<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eddie!<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cThe Eddie Betts goal was one of the great moments of the football year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buddy\u2019s back<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cI thought the rise back to form of Buddy Franklin was fantastic to see\u2026 it was fantastic to see him back at his best and play some of his best footy ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s football<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cThe launch of the women\u2019s footy league is going to be one of the great stories of the game for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danger cat<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cPatrick Dangerfield\u2019s form at his new club and winning the Brownlow &#8212; it was pretty fantastic to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bulldogs &#8212; at last<\/strong><br><br \/>\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone who has enjoyed AFL football this year could go past as the greatest story of the year the fact that the Western Bulldogs won the flag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won it from the bottom half of the eight, they won it from seventh position, they had to go to Perth, they had to go to GWS where they were gone with just a few minutes to go\u2026 the Bulldogs winning the flag has given everyone a bit of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>MOST POPULAR<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/news\/jon-blake-returns-to-fiveaa\"><strong>BLAKEY\u2019S BACK &#8212; JON BLAKE RETURNS TO FIVEAA<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/shows\/david-and-will\/sa-government-is-about-to-break-this-election-promise\"><strong>PENBO &#8212; GOVERNMENT IS ABOUT TO BREAK THIS ELECTION PROMISE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caroline Wilson looks back the 2016 season and picks the best and worst footy stories of the year. **LOWLIGHTS** Essendon suspension \u201cOne of the biggest stories ever known to the game when those 34 Essendon players were suspended for a year.
