{"id":30784,"date":"2016-08-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/take-the-grand-final-off-the-mcg-says-david-penberthy\/"},"modified":"2016-08-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-14T00:00:00","slug":"take-the-grand-final-off-the-mcg-says-david-penberthy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/take-the-grand-final-off-the-mcg-says-david-penberthy\/","title":{"rendered":"Take the Grand Final off the MCG, says Penbo"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>FIVEAA\u2019s David Penberthy says if the AFL wants to be a \u201ctruly national competition\u201d the MCG needs to be dropped as the permanent Grand Final venue.<\/h3>\n<p>According to Penbo, Melbourne has a monopoly on the economic return from hosting the grand final, \u201ceven though the governments of South and Western Australia have spent vast amounts of public money on AFL infrastructure, as have the four SA and WA clubs themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greatest success story in AFL over the past two seasons involves Adelaide Oval,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelaidenow.com.au\/news\/opinion\/david-penberthy-afl-needs-to-share-grand-final-glory\/news-story\/46f8d42e45d6b4b371ac16a79b415424?login=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Penbo wrote in the Sunday Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed if you took the routine near-capacity crowds at both the Crows\u2019 and Port\u2019s fixtures out of the equation, the AFL attendance figures would look pretty anaemic right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LISTEN HERE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/278274333&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sports Minister Leon Bignell said the MCG had \u201clocked in\u201d the AFL Grand Final for 50 years as part of a major upgrade done in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that we\u2019ve heard from the AFL and the MCC is that there\u2019s not going to be any budging on that until 2037,\u201d Mr Bignell said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In his Sunday column, Penbo asked:&nbsp;\u201cWhy should it be the case that the lethargic old Victorian clubs should enjoy a stranglehold in perpetuity on the right to host the most important game of the year?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoutinely the attendance at Crows matches tops 50,000, even with the crappy timeslots the AFL will habitually flick at my club, as punishment to our fans for being silly enough to keep turning up anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven Port, playing inconsistent football, get 40,000 to 45,000 at most of their games, with rubbish timeslots too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just about the money, says Penbo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real insult lies with the hometown advantage the interstate teams are denied. As the 2016 season is currently placed, we have a situation right now where only three teams in the eight are from Melbourne.
