{"id":30898,"date":"2016-07-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/government-burns-%2430m-according-to-opposition\/"},"modified":"2016-07-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T00:00:00","slug":"government-burns-%2430m-according-to-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/government-burns-%2430m-according-to-opposition\/","title":{"rendered":"Government burns $30m, according to opposition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The opposition has accused the government of wasting $30 million in botched admin practices and incorrect payments \u2013 including electricity bill concessions paid to dead South Australians.<\/h3>\n<p>On Wednesday it emerged that the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion had paid concessions&nbsp;to 4,350 deceased people over eight years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the fifth audit where the Auditor-General has reported on significant issues,\u201d Shadow Minister Duncan McFetridge told FIVEAA\u2019s Matthew Pantelis.<\/p>\n<p>Mr McFetridge said as well as paying dead people, nearly $3 million was paid to people where there was no record and nearly $12 million was paid where there was no approval process at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a mess this is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>LISTEN HERE:<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/272367107&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Taking into account other spending, Mr McFetrdige estimated the total cost of government waste was $30 million and suggested&nbsp;Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison was out of her depth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe minister has to take responsibility,\u201d he said. \u201cThe minister must\u2019ve known \u2013 she should\u2019ve known. If she didn\u2019t know, well, then she\u2019s out of her depth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c$30 million,\u201d he said. \u201cThe minster can say it\u2019s only three per cent, but it\u2019s $30 million that could\u2019ve gone into people who are doing it tough, doing it hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister Bettison admitted the waste was unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI admit that we\u2019ve had some issues within our concessions system,\u201d Minister Bettison said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a long-term issue.
