{"id":30905,"date":"2016-07-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/take-a-look-at-yourself-bernardi-tells-turnbull\/"},"modified":"2016-07-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-05T00:00:00","slug":"take-a-look-at-yourself-bernardi-tells-turnbull","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/take-a-look-at-yourself-bernardi-tells-turnbull\/","title":{"rendered":"Take a look at yourself, Bernardi tells Turnbull"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has called on Malcolm Turnbull to examine his conscience after the PM led the Liberal party into \u201cdisaster\u201d at this year\u2019s federal election.<\/h3>\n<p>Bernardi said the \u201carchitects\u201d of the election result needed to be \u201cheld to account\u201d, including Mr Turnbull himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he should be asking himself whether he\u2019s done the Liberal party a service or a disservice,\u201d he told FIVEAA\u2019s Matthew Pantelis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately in politics there seems to be this method of glossing over it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone says, \u2018It wasn\u2019t my fault, it\u2019s going nothing to do with me,\u2019 and the caravan moves on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we have seen a significant decline in the stature of the Liberal party. It\u2019s time we held some people to account for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople should examine their conscience, think about their contribution to this disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>LISTEN HERE:<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/272055959&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question we\u2019ve got to ask ourselves is how did we get to a circumstance where we had a significant majority in the House of Representatives and now we look at the best option is to perhaps form minority government?\u201d Bernardi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conclusion I come to is we went down the same path Labor did during the Rudd-Gillard years. We made a decision, which was incorrect in my view, to change leaders in the first term and the transaction cost of that has been felt at this election. The challenge is where do we go from here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernardi said the conservative wing of the Liberal party had been disciplined for the length of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe offered nothing but support to the Prime Minister,\u201d he said. \u201cWe provided advice behind the scenes when we can. That advice was seldom listened to, I have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot turn your back on your party base. This is something I have consistently warned about for many, many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernardi criticsed comments made by Malcolm Turnbull that there is no place in Australian politics for Pauline Hanson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yet she reflects the concerns of many people. Whether she does that well or badly is up for others to judge, but you cannot dismiss the fact that so many people are worried about the things that she\u2019s talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bernardi said the party had alienated its base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is something we are paying a huge price for.
