{"id":30958,"date":"2016-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/uncategorized\/power-boss-defends-50k-state-government-handout\/"},"modified":"2016-06-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-06-22T00:00:00","slug":"power-boss-defends-50k-state-government-handout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.fiveaa.com.au\/show\/power-boss-defends-50k-state-government-handout\/","title":{"rendered":"Power boss defends $50k state government handout"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Port Adelaide CEO Keith Thomas has hit back at critics amid public fury at a decision by the state government to give the club $50,000.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThey probably don\u2019t realise about the transport levy,\u201d Thomas told FIVEAA\u2019s Rowey and Bicks on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The money \u2013 which will go towards the cost of pre-game entertainment at Port\u2019s clash with Hawthorn on 7 July \u2013 is compensation for a train outage earlier in the month that delayed Power fans reaching a game at Adelaide Oval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pay hundreds of thousands of dollars each year into a transport levy, which we\u2019ve argued about, but it is all about ensuring that people can get to the game free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe $50,000 is a refund for part of the service the government was unable to deliver on that day. In that context, it\u2019s not unreasonable,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it should be construed as a negative. It\u2019s a government saying we want to make amends.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>LISTEN TO KEITH THOMAS:<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/270298188&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thomas said Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan had been embarrassed about the train outage on 11 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Stephen Mullighan\u2019s great credit he was on the phone very quickly saying, \u2018Look, we\u2019re really embarrassed about this\u2026 is there anything we can do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said he told the government the most important thing was to make sure it didn\u2019t happen again, but would accept money towards pre-game entertainment at Port Adelaide\u2019s multicultural round match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat game is going to be an opportunity for us to put a good show on. If you wanted help us out with that by way of refunding some of the transport levy, we\u2019d be open to that. Which is what they\u2019ve done,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought personally it was a really good gesture. They failed to deliver the service that we\u2019re basically paying for and they wanted to make it right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that missed out on 11 June will hopefully be there again on 7 July and knowing that this is largely for them.
