\u201cCairns would have been more logical and Tassie would have been better.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe moment you\u2019re on the nose and rugby is high, then the gap just broadens,\u201d Malthouse said. \u201cIt must be so hard for the blokes who are trying to win money to balance the books up there because there are going to be handouts from the AFL for some years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Leigh Matthews, who recently claimed Queensland was only big enough for one team, said he was talking about \u201cfinancial self-sufficiency\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s too early say the Gold Coast are a failure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cClearly they\u2019ve been in the competition six years, and yeah, they haven\u2019t played finals, that\u2019s true, but a lot of clubs go a lot of years without playing finals.<\/p>\n
Leigh said two years ago the Suns were flying.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were going to play finals,\u201d he said, \u201cand Gary Ablett got injured\u2026 he didn\u2019t play again that year and they fell away and didn\u2019t play finals.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were starting to look like they were finals bound, but they\u2019ve got a lot of injuries. Their whole key position spine is injured,\u201d Leigh said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s far too early to say they\u2019re a failure.\u201d<\/p>\n
