McGuire admitted during the week<\/a> that he considered quitting as Collingwood president after his side\u2019s 15-point loss to Carlton on Saturday.<\/p>\n\u201cI haven\u2019t been that laid low from the footy for a long, long time,\u201d McGuire said on Melbourne radio on Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was completely shattered as were our supporters who were giving me their honest and frank opinion. You question yourself… can you go through it again? Have you got any more ideas? I don\u2019t know if I could impact on the club,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Speaking on FIVEAA, Matthews praised McGuire\u2019s time as Collingwood president, but hinted the end could be in sight.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s been there 18 years, nothing lasts forever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Matthews said it would be natural for McGuire to question himself in the wake of a bad loss.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he\u2019s just making public a bit of a private thinking process that might\u2019ve popped through his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked whether another club might ever recruit McGuire, Matthews said: \u201cYou\u2019d want to.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cFair dinkum, he is the best chairman ever. I don\u2019t care who they talk about.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is so well connected in Melbourne, he\u2019s got his media profile, a very smart man and his lobby is very powerful.<\/p>\n
\u201cEddie\u2019s role as chairman of Collingwood has just been, I think, outstanding.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf ever you were going to poach someone from another club I reckon (it\u2019s him).<\/p>\n
\u201cBut clearly he does it because he\u2019s a passionate Collingwood fan.\u201d<\/p>\n
