In a tense clash on FIVEAA breakfast, David Penberthy has grilled SA Water CEO John Ringham about what \u2013 if anything \u2013 the company will pay towards the clean up after water mains burst in Paradise and Campbelltown, flooding several homes.<\/h3>\n

Mr Ringham said until reasons for the burst mains were investigated, he couldn\u2019t say what compensation SA Water would offer those affected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a complicated, if you like, legislative position,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe legislative position is that if there is no negligence shown, then these are deemed not to be SA Water\u2019s, if you like, responsibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we will work very closely with those customers and their insurance companies to ensure that their properties are put back into good order as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Ringham was adamant SA Water properly maintains its infrastructure.<\/h3>\n

\u201cWe spend well over $50 million a year on operational repairs and maintenance, and around $300 million a year on capital improvements and replacements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe invest significantly in our infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pressed by Penberthy to explain what compensation SA Water would offer victims of the burst water main, Mr Ringham refused to be drawn.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you listen to me, I said we are investigating what caused these bursts. Until we\u2019ve done that investigation I can\u2019t answer that question,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want to answer because you don\u2019t want to pay,\u201d replied Penbo.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou guys just don\u2019t want to pay any money for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
