Herald Sun chief footy writer Mark Robinson has defended comments he made in the wake of Garry Lyon\u2019s fall from grace, saying if you want to make jokes about the pain of others, you should make sure \u201cyour own backyard is tidy\u201d.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a life thing for me, that\u2019s got nothing to do with Garry Lyon,\u201d Robbo told Rowey and Bicks on FIVEAA.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, if you want to hang it on people, make sure your own backyard is pretty solid. In this case it\u2019s not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Robbo has been outspoken about the fact Lyon was part of media teams on Channel 9 and Triple M radio that made mileage out of the personal lives of others, including Ben Cousins, Wayne Carey and Ricky Nixon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you pass judgment or make jokes or poke fun at someone else\u2019s pain or expense, best your own backyard is tidy,\u201d Robbo wrote in an opinion piece in the Herald Sun<\/a>.<\/h3>\n

He backed up the comments when he spoke on SEN radio in Melbourne last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are saying we\u2019re going to be dancing on this terrible story \u2013 there is no greater group in Melbourne, if not Australia media than the Channel 9 and Triple M group who dance on the misfortune of so many people and make jokes about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know Ben Cousins was suicidal, Wayne Carey was said to be suicidal, Ricky Nixon was said to be suicidal but meanwhile the Triple M and Channel 9 boys make skits about other people\u2019s misfortunes.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, one of their own, the big daddy of them, it\u2019s \u2018everyone don\u2019t say anything!\u2019<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t want to go to that level but I like consistency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In his opinion piece Robinson also said Lyon was \u201canti-social and cocky\u201d, revealed there was bad blood between Channel 9 stable mates Eddie McGuire and James Brayshaw and took a swipe at Lyon\u2019s replacement on Footy Classified Damian Barrett.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamian Barrett to replace Lyon on the panel of Footy Classified is like replacing Frank Sinatra with a karaoke singer,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Robbo said he stands by the comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got no issues with any of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in a position where I\u2019m employed to write comment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only personal one in there was Barrett. He said the same of me three years ago so I saved that whack.\u201d<\/p>\n
