While there was gloating that Australia signed a free trade agreement with China, a massive social problem has occurred: unemployment.<\/p>\n
China has sold steel at below cost and dumped it in the EU, UK, US and Australia. Workers are demonstrating against the dumping<\/a> that’s undercutting the steel industries in Europe, America and the U.K.<\/p>\n We just finished a case against dumped Italian tomatoes, which now attract an excise or tariff\u2026 why on god\u2019s earth don’t we do this with cheap Chinese steel?<\/p>\n The workers at Whyalla steel and industrial engineers and spring makers have done nothing wrong, yet they are sacrificed at the alter of free trade because of policy failure and stupidly expensive electricity \u2013 another policy failure.<\/p>\n The American United steel workers have accused China of predatory prices by devaluing steel and expecting the rest of the world to support China’s industry at the expense of their own.<\/p>\n Australia has been gutless in this matter… The salt of the earth manufacturers in this state and others are being ignored because no one\u2019s got the balls to challenge the uneven playing field…<\/p>\n Europe has brought in provisional anti-dumping duties against cold rolled flat steel from China and Russia, and there are nine anti-dumping investigations underway by the European Commission.<\/p>\n<\/p>\nWorkers protest China’s dumping of steel, Brussels | Image | EU Observer<\/a><\/h6>\n
