With Joe Hockey set to officially announce his retirement from parliament on Wednesday, expectation is that he will be appointed Australia\u2019s next ambassador to Washington\u2026<\/h3>\n

But maybe not, says FIVEAA\u2019s David Penberthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe presumption in Canberra is that Joe Hockey is going to be appointed our next ambassador to Washington when Kim Beazley the former Labor leader wraps up,\u201d Penbo said on FIVEAA breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got really good mail \u2013 from a couple of people in fact \u2013 in Adelaide who know the former foreign minister Alexander Downer extremely well.”<\/p>\n

Penbo said there was a very strong view from the \u201cbig end of town\u201d that Downer would be named the next ambassador to Washington when he wraps up as high commissioner in London.<\/p>\n
