There are numerous factors that influence why people move homes. Often our needs develop and change with time, resulting in the desire or even necessity to find a new residence.<\/p>\n

The Survey of Income and Housing from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) adds weight to the common saying that “nothing lasts forever,” especially when it comes to residing in your humble abode. Nearly half of respondents aged 15 years and over had moved homes over the five years prior to being questioned.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, over 1.2 million Australians reported having the desire to move but would be unlikely to do so – you’d think they would get in touch with a mortgage adviser<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Regardless, here are a few of the main reasons why people move homes.<\/p>\n

Upsizing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is your home bursting at the seams? A common motivation for getting a home loan in South Australia and moving is a growing family. While a two-bedroom home will probably be a great place for you and your spouse to live, adding kids to the equation may cramp things a little.<\/p>\n

Having kids can mean the home that once was perfect no longer suits you. You may need additional bedrooms and more space outside, not to mention more than one bathroom as no one likes waiting in line to use the toilet!<\/p>\n

Downsizing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ABS has forecast that by 2031, couples without children at home (or ’empty nests’) will become Australia’s most common household. This means there will be 3.5 million people with more space than they really need. In addition to filling in the gaps, a smaller home will often be easier to maintain, require less cleaning, hold less risk and will give you the opportunity to pay off your debts quicker.<\/p>\n

Location<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are reasons aplenty for wanting to live in a different area, such as being closer to friends and family, work, school or public transport. What’s interesting though, is that the ABS found that of the Australians who had moved homes in the previous year before the survey, 60 per cent had moved only nine kilometres or less.<\/p>\n

It would seem these people were quite happy where they were.<\/p>\n
