\u201cThis is a milestone study,\u201d Prof. Richard Harvey from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute told Jeremy Cordeaux on FIVEAA.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s one step towards realising the dream of cardiac regeneration,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
This refers to the ability of the heart to replace lost tissue after a significant injury like a heart attack.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s traditionally been thought that heart muscles cells are pretty much incapable of reentering the proliferative phase \u2013 or undergoing cell division to increase their numbers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat this study shows is that that\u2019s possible, and it\u2019s possible at very significant levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat heralds hope that we\u2019ll be able to find ways to do that in humans in the fairly near term,\u201d Prof. Harvey said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we envisage is that the heart will know how to replace those billions of muscles cells that are lost after a heart attack.\u201d<\/p>\n
