\u201cThe reality is that thousands of people are going to lose their job,\u201d Greg Combet from the Automotive Transformation Taskforce told FIVEAA.<\/p>\n
Mr Combet said he couldn\u2019t guarantee people alternative jobs, but the Government was doing what it could to encourage private investment in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to be supporting those workers with every dollar we\u2019ve got,\u201d he said, \u201cto help them get the skills wherein they\u2019ll find a job in another part of the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Combet said it wasn\u2019t possible to save the industry with public money.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe honest answer is no,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to say to people we\u2019ve got to be realistic about this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think governments can help companies achieve certain things \u2013 provide incentives, provide grants \u2013 and we\u2019re doing that. But ultimately the leadership of a company has to operate in the market conditions that exist.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe provision of ongoing subsidies is just not a realistic expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a number of companies that I think really do have a good future, but there\u2019s no doubt that the majority of them I think are likely to close,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
