Professor Nigel Curtis from the Murdoch Children\u2019s Research Institute says besides combating tuberculosis, the vaccine boosts the body\u2019s immune system, reducing the symptoms of coronavirus.<\/p>\n
In comments reported by 7 News, Professor Curtis said:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really the first time the vaccine has been used in this way,\u201d Prof Curtis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe vaccine has the ability to \u2018train\u2019 the immune system to respond more strongly to infection.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has really alerted to the world that we are always just a few weeks away from a pandemic,\u201d Prof Curtis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if we make a vaccine against this particular virus, if a different one pops up, it\u2019s very good for us to have an off-the-shelf vaccine that works against the number of different viruses.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I didn\u2019t think (the tuberculosis vaccine) would work, I wouldn\u2019t have been here seven days a week for the last month with a team of 20 people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
