\u201cDon\u2019t be surprised\u201d if Australian schools eventually close during the COVID-19 crisis and don\u2019t open again this year, reports AFR political editor Phil Coorey<\/a>.<\/h3>\n

Phil told FIVEAA Breakfast\u2019s David & Will on Friday:<\/p>\n

\u201c[PM Scott Morrison’s] thinking isn\u2019t fixed on this. I can tell you pretty confidently they expect at some stage they\u2019re going to have to shut the schools. They don\u2019t want to and neither do the premiers\u2026 but they suspect it\u2019s probably inevitable but at this stage the advice, medical and other, is no need\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason they\u2019re giving us is once they close, that\u2019s it — they\u2019ll be closed for the rest of the year. So if we close them in March pretty much everyone is going to have to repeat a year. You\u2019re looking at 500-800,000 people won\u2019t be able to go to work because they\u2019ll have to stay home and look after their kids and you can\u2019t rely on grandparents because they\u2019re too vulnerable.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn England and places like that where they are closing schools kids whose parents are doctors and nurses are still going to school\u2026 so you\u2019re not taking out of circulation your frontline workers you\u2019re going to need.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe prime minster is not bloody minded about this. He\u2019s not saying, no, never. He\u2019s saying not now because once they close that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be surprised if it happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
