The increase is costing motorist up to an extra $30 a tank now compared to January 2019.<\/p>\n
According to the RAA:<\/p>\n
The 12-month surge in fuel costs come as Adelaide\u2019s petrol price cycle spikes before the Australia Day long weekend.<\/p>\n
Adelaide\u2019s average ULP price this month is 159c\/l – compared to an average price of 121c\/l in January last year.<\/p>\n
This price increase has significantly impacted on the cost of a tank of petrol, ranging from an extra $30 for a large four-wheel-drive, an extra $26 for a medium sized SUV, $23 for a family sedan and even $15 for a city run about, RAA fuel expert Mark Borlace said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 30 per cent increase in average petrol prices between January last year and this month is hurting motorists hip pocket,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
The petrol price surge was also flowing through to the cost of driving holidays, Mr Borlace said.<\/p>\n
\u201cFilling up at average Adelaide ULP prices this January compared to January last year is costing drivers of a common car like a Toyota Camry an extra $41 for a return trip to Port Lincoln,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA return trip Mt Gambier in the same vehicle has jumped by $27, while a return drive to Renmark has risen by $16.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Mr Borlace said crude oil prices had increased during the past 12 months as a result of improving trade relations between the US and China.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has driven up the wholesale price of petrol, however changes to the price cycle at the pump has also contributed to higher average prices in Adelaide,\u2019\u2019 Mr Borlace said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe spike in prices has increased from around 20c\/l to 40c\/l, so the cost of missing out on cheap prices has also soared.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd fuel prices regularly stay high for about five days now, rather than two or three days.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is why RAA is looking forward to the State Government honouring its commitment to introduce real-time fuel pricing so motorists can fill up at the cheapest prices available.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Real-time fuel pricing is available in NSW, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and has been trialled in Queensland for the past year.<\/p>\n
According to Queensland\u2019s motoring organisation RACQ, real-time fuel pricing information made available through apps has increased competition among retailers, increased the number of cheap price days and put downward pressure on pump prices.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are calling on the government to give South Australians the same price information available to motorists interstate,\u2019\u2019 Mr Borlace said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
