The exemption from social restrictions for a Black Lives Matter rally in Adelaide on Saturday<\/a> sets a \u201cdangerous precedent\u201d, argues FIVEAA Breakfast\u2019s David Penberthy.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a tense exchange on Tuesday Penbo put to Premier Steven Marshall that a caf\u00e9 owner who was visited by police for having too many people in his store \u201cshould have put up a Black Lives Matter sign\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MARSHALL:<\/strong> \u201cNo I think that\u2019s a really cynical attitude to have quite frankly. I think the Black Lives Matter situation is a very real situation around the world. I think these are difficult decisions for the police commissioner<\/a> to have to make but he has my absolute 100 per cent full support.\u201d<\/p>

PENBO:<\/strong> \u201cI wasn\u2019t trying to make light of the impetus for the protest. The issue is the timing.\u201d<\/p>

MARSHALL:<\/strong> \u201cWell what would\u2019ve you done? Tell us what you would\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>

PENBO:<\/strong> \u201cI think you as premier could\u2019ve been much more forthright in telling people not to attend. You could have been much more forthright as other premiers were in telling people not to go.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m not pretending it\u2019s not an incredibly fraught and complicated issue, but it does worry me this perception that if you get a group of people who are on the record as saying they are going to defy authority and do something anyway, you guys raise the white flag. I think it sets a dangerous precedent.\u201d<\/p>

MARSHALL: <\/strong>\u201cWe weren\u2019t raising the white flag and I\u2019ve been through it several times. You haven\u2019t been able to present what you would\u2019ve done in that situation. I think it was a really difficult situation and I\u2019m backing the police commissioner\u2026 I think he made the right decision.\u201d<\/p>

PENBO:<\/strong> \u201cI think you\u2019ve done a great job as a communicator and a great job as a leader. I think on Friday you did a poor job, respectfully premier, as a communicator, particularly as the leader of a party that champions business.<\/p>

\u201cYou left too much of the explaining of this to the police commissioner and you could\u2019ve come out yourself much more forcefully and said frankly I don\u2019t think we want a mass rally, I don\u2019t think we want people to attend.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
